Automatic Coffee Machine Interesting & Free Facts

I’m not a coffee connoisseur. I love Starbucks. My wife loves Starbucks, but for some reason she wanted a single-cup coffee maker for Mother’s Day. She never drinks coffee – always some sort of latte or frou-frou drink from Starbucks. Thinking i could read her mind – I went out on a limb and decided what she really meant was ‘I want an idiot proof espresso maker so I can make my own lattes.’ We have a huge Jura-Capressa that was given to her 5 years ago (no – not Mother’s Day, but close) and she never used it. “WAY TOO COMPLICATED”.
Did a little research. Found the Nespresso D290 with the Aeroccino milk frother. I was a reluctant purchaser, but I could not be more pleased. Wife now makes her own lattes, cappucinos and other frou-frou drinks daily. It takes her about 2 1/2 minutes all the way through clean up. The D290 is simple, fast, and makes an awesome espresso (Roma is her favorite). However, the aeroccino is what sealed the deal. That thing froths milk perfectly everytime in about 70 seconds!
Why didn’t I give it 5 stars? You cannot control the temperature of either machine. I prefer my drinks a tad bit hotter. i haven’t stuck a thermometer in it (I will do that), but I like it hotter – particularly the frothed milk – but Nespresso says it is at the maximum temp without creating some chemical/lactose disaster. I did find a way to get the espresso hotter – and that is to do a dry-run (no coffee pod in machine) and push the Lungo button prior to making an espresso.
We are actually in love with our – err HER machine. VERY pleased.
Starbucks didn’t invent espresso but they revolutionized the way we look at it. From cappuccinos to lattes or just a straight shot of espresso, coffee and coffee drinks have become the drink of the morning. You can find a coffee shop on just about every corner in every town. However, with the cost of coffee on the rise and the world economy on the decline, espresso coffee machines have boomed in sales.
Buying an espresso machine for your home should be researched before you run to the nearest big box store and grab the first one off the shelf. You should decide ahead of time how much you are willing to invest in your espresso maker. They can range in price from under $50 to well over $1000. It all depends on what you are looking for.
There are a few questions you can ask yourself to help you determine how much you are willing to spend. As a general rule of thumb they are:
* How often do you plan on using the machine? If you know you are going to use it on a daily basis you will want to purchase a machine that is sturdy enough to hold up to repeated use. You should also look into one with a warranty in the event that it is damaged.
* Do you want a fully automatic machine that does everything for you? If you want your espresso machine to do everything but drink your espresso for automatic coffee machine you, be prepared to pay a premium price. If however you don’t mind adding the coffee to the machine and other small steps, you can save a lot of money.
* How much room do you have for the espresso machine? Espresso makers range in size from countertop models to ones that take up the space of a small refrigerator. Keep this in mind as you shop.
Types to Choose From
With those basic questions answered you are now ready to decide what kind of espresso machine you want. There are five basic types of machines to choose from, ranging from the simplest to the most complex and automated.
* Stovetop espresso makers, sometimes called stovetop percolators are great for the occasional espresso drinker or for campers who want their shot of caffeine even in the woods. The drawback to the stovetop espresso pot is that it only makes one cup at a time. It must cool between cups and it doesn’t form that wonderful crema that espresso drinkers love.
On the plus side, they are very inexpensive. You can pick on up around $20. They are very portable and take up no space. They can also be used without electricity, for example over a campfire.
* Piston driven espresso makers are based on the original espresso makers from long ago. They are the reason for the wonderful crema we have all come to know and love. The piston driven espresso machine requires more manual labor. This is where the term ‘pulling a shot’ originated.
* Pump driven espresso makers are the most popular variety of espresso makers for commercial use. An offspring of the piston driven maker, they are typically plumbed to a water source and use a timing device to insure that every shot of espresso pulled is of the same quality.
* Automatic and super automatic espresso machines are the newest makers to hit the market. These machines are capable of doing everything, even grinding the coffee beans. They are also the most expensive, most complicated to repair and usually take up the most space.
Automatic espresso machines do produce a more consistent shot of espresso than other machines and don’t require your assistance to do anything. They are also more capable of adjustments than other machines, allowing you to have espresso they way you want it every time.
Purchasing an espresso maker for your home can be a money saving investment. Your initial purchase may seem expensive, but making sure you are getting a quality product that will bring you years of espresso enjoyment will pay for itself in no time. And you will impress your friends and guests with the great coffee drinks you prepare for them.

Rancilio Espresso Machines Hot Tips
This is my second DeLonghi Magnifica Digital Super-Automatic Espresso/Coffee Machine I have owned within the last 2 years. I got my first model 4500 from Starbucks and it lasted about 2 years. My warranty expired on my old machine so I bought this one on Amazon. I have checked all the online vendors and Amazon has the best price on this machine. Free shipping and no taxes saves you about $250. I found this machine on Ebay for less but DeLonghi will not honor Warranty service on Ebay stores. So beware.
DeLonghi customer service has been top notch, I had to repair my first machine 7 times. Yes, seven times due to pump failure and thermostat issues. I got this machine for an office so it gets used alot. This machine is meant for home use only. I brew about 50 cups a day, so the average home user wouldn’t use more than 5 cups a day.
My repair shop says all automatic Espresso machines no matter what brand in this price range use all the same parts. He also said they all fail at least 4 times within 2 years due to the nature of the machine. I told myself that I wouldn’t buy DeLonghi anymore but he changed my mind and told me that DeLonghi has more repair shops open for Warranty service than any other vendor.
This model ESAM3500.N is nice, since it is an overall better model than the other 5 models listed for sale. Don’t spend your money on the $1999 or $2500 model because they all have the same features and will all break down no matter how well you keep your machines up to date!
If you do need to make repairs on your machine, make sure you find a repair shop near your home. I was able to get extra parts and service O-Rings for my machine cheaper than from DeLonghi webstore.
Also note, the O-Rings on this machine do break down after 3 months of use. It is the because the milk container, you can also find these O-Rings at Home Depot for $10 bucks and if you have problems with the milk function don’t send your machine into repairs for some O-Rings you can replace yourself.
I have made over 30,000 cups of Espresso & Coffee with DeLonghi machines and I am glad that I bought it. Even at $3 a cup you can see yourself saving a lot of money.
Also note you should Descale this machine at least once every 2 weeks or else your pump on this machine will fail. Don’t wait for the machine to tell you clean it. Only use the Durgol cleaner also, all other cheap cleaners DO NOT work with this machine. Do waste your time, I learned my lesson well!
Low fat or no fat milk works best with the milk spout. Do not use milk that isn’t at refrigerator temperature. The coffee mill grinder should be set at number 5, I found this to be the best tasting and best setting for this machine.
Keep in mind if you do need this machine repaired they can have your machine up to 3 weeks, due to a shortage of spare parts. All vendors use the same parts since this is an OEM type of build. The Generic Alarm code is the last breakdown I got. To save you a phone call this means your machine is dead, it needs a new pump and thermostat so hence I came to Amazon to get another!
Amazon was qreat with shipping, price, and product was new as listed! Rated 10 out of 10!
We had our Gran Dama for a very happy 6 months, the coffee was excellent, our friends dutifully impressed and then one day the coffee came out noticeably slower. We followed the de-scale instructions and de-scaled (twice) and then… no change. Right now I have a $1200 ornament and according to Delonghi it is “a scale issue” and we need to do it again – seems unlikely. When it works it works well but I would not buy another one.
1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy — never got one that works, they are 0 for 2., December 11, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
I did much comparison shopping and then finally decided to purchase this machine, in spite of its high cost. There were quite a few online reviews complaining about the infuser sticking, but I decided to try one anyway.
The unit arrived as promised and I followed the instructions “to the letter” in doing the setup and starting. Two test cups of coffee later and it was time to go to bed and wake up to a fresh cappuccino. Not quite!
The next morning I awoke to a “Generic Error” and stuck infuser. Calls to DeLonghi were of no use — they just said the unit could not be fixed and it should be returned to the seller.
Amazon Returns was a breeze (excellent service – bravo) and they shipped me a replacement unit by next day UPS. It arrived with a water damaged box and when I opened it, the replacement was clearly a factory refurb!!! Some of the documentation that had been in the new unit was missing and the water spout was missing. I hooked up the milk (which replaces the water spout) and the unit still refused to work. I can hear the microswitch click, which means it must be something other than just putting the pitcher in properly.
So it was a refurb, it was broken, and it was missing parts.
The end result is I am out the cost of shipping to send back both units ($61) and do not think I can get a refund for that from Amazon. I am technically and mechanically capable (engineer) — this machine is not properly designed or debugged. I strongly recommend you spend your money elsewhere.
I gave it one star only because there is no way to give it zero.
You get spoiled with this coffee machine, specially when it comes out just like it would in a Italian Restaurant ie Cappuchino and Latte.
