Capresso Classic Interesting Information

I bought a reconditioned unit through Amazon for a little over $100. No ergonomic problems with the frothing wand, but it does add a bit of water along with the steam. Froths fine if you pay attention, and keep the tip just under the surface. I will agree to an extent that the machine’s performance varies according to tamping pressure. In my experience — about a month, now — altering the grind slightly doesn’t seem to have much affect. I have a standard coffee mill, not a burr grinder. Maybe I’ll put a burr grinder on my Xmas list, as all the espresso afficionados seem to think one is a necessity. But getting the coffee tamped right is the issue, and it’s almost impossible to do it the way it likes it every time. Sometimes it comes out pretty fast, doing a pull in twenty seconds. Other times it would dribble some, but would still crank out the pull in a little over a minute, at worst. When I manage to tamp the coffee such that the pull takes a little over 30 seconds, the flavor seems best. The long pulls from overtamping don’t really yield any crema, so try to err on the side of tamping lightly.
The clear water tank is indeed handy, so you know when to refill.
So I’d say I get a perfect pull about half the time, but the other half are quite acceptable. I might get better with even more tamping experience.
One has to be a little careful when washing the frothing tip, it’s so small. My wife and I managed to lose track of it in the dishwater; we drained it and ran the pig. Result: a chewed frothing tip. I called Capresso’s customer service, and told them what had happened. They very kindly sent me a couple of spares at no charge — they are not sold separately from the wand (which is $7) — even though this was clearly my fault. But best to use a protocol so this doesn’t happen.

If you have sat down and added up all the money you spend on coffee, espresso, and coffee based drinks like lattes and cappuccinos you have probably come to the conclusion that it’s time to get your own machine. With so many out there to choose from how do you know which one to buy? These machines have been judged using looks, quality of machine (consistency, crema, etc.), convenience, value and price.
The Capresso Espresso Pro
With a cost of around $250 this machine has a striving-for-art deco look, but it missed that mark slightly. On the other hand, it makes a fast espresso shot s without making a huge mess. The frothing wand actually siphons the milk out the tank and into the wand, unlike other machines that send the steam into a pitcher of milk.
Although the machine is small and relatively simple to use, most reviewers report that the espresso is bitter and has a burnt taste.
Krups
Already known for its other coffee makers, the Krups capresso classic Novo 3000 is a bare bones espresso maker. It isn’t an art piece to be oohed and ahhed over, but it does make a high grade espresso. Priced at around $180, this machine is not entirely consistent in its production. When it does produce a good espresso, it is really good. Reviewers stated that its consistency is around 66% reliable. At other times the espresso came out watery or bitter.
Krups service department didn’t fare much better with reviewers. All in all, the machine is ahead of steam driven machines but espresso enthusiasts will want to opt for a more reliable, albeit more expensive model.
Starbuck Barista
Priced at $399 this machine is a little on the pricey side, but not near as pricey as some other models. Having the Starbucks name implies that this is going to produce an excellent espresso, and it doesn’t let you down. While there are more expensive brands that produce richer espressos, the Barista does make an excellent choice.
The Barista is easy to use, well designed and easy to master. The only drawback reviewers found was the steam wand is on l the left side of the maker. Most people will tend to reach to the right. This is simply a matter of becoming accustomed to reaching to the left. One final plus for the Barista is that Starbucks does have a wonderful customer service.
Gaggia Classic
This espresso maker hasn’t changed in at least 20 years and probably won’t for another 20 to come. The Gaggia, named for one of the early inventors of the espresso machines. That could account for why this machine makes such a great espresso with a very thick, wonderful crema. And all at around $499.
The Gaggia has simple controls that are easily learned and is also easy to clean and maintain. The only negative aspect reviewers reported was a small cup warmer and the length of time it takes to warm up.
Espresso machines are basically like most every other product; you get what you pay for. A $50 machine off the local chain store’s shelf won’t produce a quality espresso more than a few times, if at all. On the other hand you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to get a quality machine. The Gaggia makes a wonderfully thick, rich espresso with a golden crema and doesn’t cost as much as many other models.

The espresso machine works well, and makes a great latte. I recommend it. I’ve had no trouble.
I bought this after lots of research prompted by the untilemly demise of my Krups cappuccino machine. After receiving it, I immediately read the manual (yes, I actually READ the manual before doing anything else), set it up, filled the water tank, and gave it a test run. I purchased some Illy espresso pods with it so I could give it a test with some real Italian espresso, also I was new to pods. The machine is very user friendly, heats up quickly, and gave me my first cup of espresso in well under a minute. I’ve used pods as well as fresh ground espresso and coffee and have had no trouble. I’ve ground beans using a few different courseness settings and have had no problem making the espresso or crema coffee. I was trying to see which grind worked better and which to not use, but I found that using fine, medium, and course all worked well. There was a lot more dust when using fine, though. The dual froth system works very well, giving you excellent flexibility in your choice of drinks to make. Cleaning is a snap, also. I tend to take out the steam nozzle and clean the pipe thoroughly after every milk steaming and it takes hardly any time. The ability of continuous use makes this machine top notch for company and gatherings as I can keep the cappuccino flowing, giving guests the choice of steamed or steamed with froth, without slowing me down. Note – I use distilled water when making drinks so no scale will build up in the machine. If you need a great machine that you won’t have to worry about – BUY THIS MACHINE!
Nice looking machine, easy to see the wate in the tank. We tried several types of espresso and they all came out weak tasting compared to our old machine. This machine doesn’t have as much pressure as others.
this product cam poorly packaged from Amazon. because of this the machine came with many broken parts including the pump.
the only saving grace is that Capresso has great customer service and will be sending me out a new one after the holidays.
We’ve had this machine for about a month. It’s very easy to use, and produces consistently thick crema, regardless of the brand of coffee we try. It also heats up quickly when first turned on, and takes only 20 seconds or so after making espresso to get the water hot enough to steam milk. We’re very happy with this machine, and would certainly recommend it to others.
A great espresso machine… if it worked as advertised.
The unit arrived via Fedex Home delivery. The packaging show no sign of wear or damage. But this unit does NOT heat up the water. After setting it up, I turned it on and waited for its to preheat. The ready light never went on and the water is not heated at all! The pump did work and water flow out of the unit but the unit is just defective. Judging from this experience, the quality control of this model doesn’t seems ok to me. Strongly NOT recommended.
Bought this a few weeks back. I was initially disappointed with the quality of the shots. It turns out that the grind and quality of the beans are paramount for this machine. This is generally true for all machines, but more so for this one.
Overall, excellent flavor extract with no bitterness at all. It equals or betters Starbucks Barista espresso maker. I attribute it to the sustained pump pressure and valve mechanism.
Use a dark roast (Peet’s in the SFO Bay area) for best results with a close to fine grind. If grinding at Peet’s, use a setting of 4/5 (their default is 3 for espresso). If you end up having a finer grind, use a small amount of coarser grind at the bottom and put the finer grind at the top. This works beautifully well for me.
Read the reviews of many different Espresso machines and you will most likely find a lot of things in common such as they leak and they don’t work as they are suppose to and the customer is sending them back and even that it is necessary to use a small shot glass cause thats what only fits under the dispenser. Even customers report the expensive ones $400 dollar machines leaking, … So I would consider getting this one.
Anyway I just got mine and it works fine and for some reason it was selling for 119.00 when I bought it now its a lot more.
But anyway, the insides of this one is stainless steel I think it is a necessary to get a stainless steel espresso machine because aluminum can be toxic.
OTHER REASONS Y I LIKE THIS ONE
This machine makes great crema and the frother is great my brother has a $350 Starbucks machine that he has to fight with each time to do the froth. Also with this Capresso machine a normal size coffee cup can fit under it with a little agravation but I have some coffee cups I bought at Target that were wide and short but I have not seen them since at Target but at least with this machine you don’t have to use a cup the hight of a shot glass. HOws my spelling…
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS that come with this machine it explains all the important stuff for instance… the size of the coffee grind is key. If you buy pre ground coffee it will probably be to coarse (BIG) or to powdery (small) Just because it reads espress ground does not mean its good for you.
HOW TO GET THE RIGHT GRIND SIZE – SIZE DOES MATTER !!
What I do is buy Whole Bean of the coffee that I like off of the Internet then I take it to the grocery store …. talk to the manager they will be thrilled that you stopped by they figure you gonna buy something … and I grind it at the store. I didn’t buy a Burr Grinder. I DO NOT use the espresso setting at the grocery store I use a setting more coarse -larger .. using the espresso powdery setting is a good way to burn up your motor and destroy your machine. If you use a setting to coarse its gonna be like iced tea. I grind mine 1 setting smaller than the auto drip setting. I think
****The instructions explain all this about the ground size. And there is no need to warm up the machine as far as running hot water through it just let it warm up per instructions then set it on espresso to fill your cup.
WHAT I DON’T LIKE ABOUT IT
Only thing I don’t like with this machine is one has to stand there and watch it make the coffee cause there is not an auto turn off — like at 6 ounces it just keeps coming out. (I had one before that you could set it to turn off at different ounces but it constantly leaked all over the kitchen but the auto turn off spoiled me)
The other thing is when one froths the milk it can be loud to some folks. But for me thats ok as it keeps the peeping toms and burglers away – do to the noise cause they figure if they do a home invasion I’m gonna probably be coming at them with a chain saw.
HOW TO FROTH THE MILK
USE 1 % or 0 % low fat milk that makes the best froth AND thats what the instructions say. Froth the milk in a pyrex glass with a thermometer in it froth it until the milk is like at 140 degrees according to the thermometer this is how you get hot espresso. Frothing it to 150 + curdles the milk and your guests spit it out all over your kitchen…. If you want a hot espresso with no milk then Froth the espresso that just came out in the pyrex cup and heat it up to 160 and burn a whole in your tongue. You can either Froth it or Steam it per the instructions read them I keep it on “Froth” .. thats with the thing down.
THE STIGMA WITH THE WET MUSH IN THE FILTER
You will get a wet mush of coffee grinds when you are through no problem bang it out in the trash can making sure the catch is pressed down to hold the metal filter so it does not fall in the trash can then rinse it off in sink. Putting Grinds down the sink according to a plumber I know … not Jack the Plumber a different one .. will clog up pipes and is like cement. Spent grounds do go down my sink but most go in the trash can cause I bang the grounds out first measuring the amount that goes down the sink one day I came up with .005% plus or minus .003%. If you must know.
I have no leaks or ANY problems as yet.
If you get the thing and its a lemon send it back to Amazon they are good about customer service but mine works fine hope yours does too.
